City population contraction heralds slashed budgets

The 2001 census shows large population drops in some city areas - demographics that could see budget cuts in central funding for local authority services.

Top loser could be Westminster council which has 25 per cent fewer residents than previously thought, a development that could see a £40 million cut.

Other big population falls are in Kensington and Chelsea, down 16 per cent, and Suffolk's Forrest Heath at 22 per cent.

The census puts the UK's population at 58,789,194.
