European legislation which is expected to bring the end of a four year ban on the sale and use of new GM food products in Britain and the rest of Europe takes effect today.

The rules will ensure that all GM food and crops go through a series of risk assessment tests before they are approved for sale, marketing or planting anywhere in the European Union.
