'Narrow' backing for modern Commons
Robin Cook has revealed that a "narrow majority" of MPs back reform of Commons working hours.
If MPs back modernisation proposals during a debate next Tuesday, the new hours, which are designed to be more family friendly, could be in place when the Commons returns from its Christmas break.
The Commons leader may face a battle from both Tory and Labour traditionalists - including government whips - who mistrust the move to a three day working week.
