Fire strike: Fleet Street responds

The Telegraph says the strike is a "serious test" for ministers - but calls on the Fire Brigades Union to reconsider its stance, arguing "it would be better if the firemen recognised their special responsibilities and put the public first".

The Independent believes that the fire fighters should wait until the independent review into its working practices has reported. "Their case is not so strong that it can justify a single avoidable death," its editorial says.

The Mail criticises the rail union's willingness to walk out on the issue of safety, claiming that such a course of action is "hypocritical cant".

Today's Express claims: "Fire fighters should signal a willingness to introduce modern working practices, the government should bring forward the review and let us have it before the run-up to Bonfire Night."

The Sun rails against the rise in union militancy. Its editorial states: "Labour has given the unions several inches... Now they plan to take a mile."

The Mirror calls on Tony Blair to get personally involved in the dispute and disputes the ability of Nick Raynsford and John Prescott.

The paper claims: "What this needs is a real big hitter. Maybe even Tony Blair himself. The union won't be bought off by beer and sandwiches at Number 10. But they should respect proper negotiation which shows a real respect of their value. Over to you Mr Blair."
