John Prescott's plans for English devolution will alienate business and undermine slow-growing regions, business leaders will warn today.

In its response to the white paper, to be published today, the CBI said any decision to press on with devolution would undermine the government's claim to be business friendly.

The CBI wants the government to set up a taskforce to consider alternative options, including strengthening regional development agencies.
