The home secretary has urged immigrants to speak English inside their homes as well as outside them.

David Blunkett said that speaking English was essential for immigrants to become involved with "wider modern culture".

His comments are made in an essay for "Rethinking Britishness", a review of modern British identity published by the Foreign Policy Centre think tank.

Community groups condemned the remarks as "insulting" and said Blunkett should stay out of people's private lives.
