Independent auditor may rule on IRA ceasefire

The government could be set to appoint an independent auditor to rule on the validity of paramilitary ceasefires in Ulster.

The idea, floated by Northern Ireland secretary Dr John Reid on Monday and raised by David Trimble during a meeting with the prime minister yesterday, could help ease unionist concerns about the continuing activities of republican terrorists.

But Sinn Fein said such a move would put paramilitaries rather than politicians centre stage.
