American defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday snubbed re-elected chancellor Gerhard Schroeder when he refused to meet his German counterpart during a Nato meeting.

Schroeder will arrive in London for talks with Tony Blair tonight for a meeting set to be dominated by the growing rift between Germany and the US.

Schroeder last night sacked the minister who sparked the "Hitler" row with the US.
