A senior police officer has warned that crime will continue to increase unless the police stops following targets and concentrates on improving community relations.

Sir Edward Crew, chief constable of the west midlands, said: "Unless the police have a strong presence in communities and are known and respected, then crime will undoubtedly rise in the long term because we won't have the local intelligence which comes from individual officers being trusted."
