Mortgage lending hit a record £21.8 billion last month, figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders showed.

But a survey out this morning from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors suggests that house price rises could be slowing down.

The balance of surveyors reporting price rises over falls is now 53 per cent, down from 63 per cent in June.
