Queen Mother quibbled over tips

The Queen Mother haggled over the payment of tips for Royal Marine guardsmen, reveal papers released by the Public Record Office.

Clarence House resisted Treasury demands that they should pay the half crown tips.

Papers also reveal that Jeeves creator PG Wodehouse was overlooked for a knighthood not merely because of broadcasts for the Nazis but because the UK's Washington ambassador said the honour would "give currency to a Bertie Wooster image of the British character".
