Derek Simpson, the new head of the Amicus trade union, has signalled that upon taking office next January he will ballot members on support for monetary union.

He has also announced there will be an immediate audit of the union's financial links with the Britain in Europe pressure group.

Amicus's financial support for the group is said to run into six figures.

Simpson said: "I want the union's money spent on the members, not euro propaganda."
