Teacher vacancy stats reveal mixed picture

Teaching shortages have led to headteachers recruiting record numbers of unqualified staff, teachers' unions claimed yesterday.

After the government published figures showing that there has been an increase of more than 9,000 - with the number of full time teachers and vacancies dropping from 2,110 to 1,800 - teachers' leaders said that picture was far from complete because not enough of the new teachers are permanent, fully-qualified members of staff.
