Williams becomes new Archbishop

Dr Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Wales, was yesterday named as George Carey's successor.

Williams will formally take up his role as Archbishop of Canterbury in November, following Dr Carey's retirement.

During his first press conference yesterday, Williams made clear that he would only support an attack on Iraq if it had the backing of the United Nations.

A Daily Mail headline describes him as a "socialist puritan with the air of a forgetful don".

Commenting on Dr William's criticisms of Disney's commercialism, the Sun says it is about time the American corporation was taken down a peg. "Who do these people think they are? Coming over here and cheering up our kids!"

"Not a good start for a man we had hoped to support," the paper notes.
