Plans to introduce a UK-wide system of ID cards are set to come under furious fire this week.

David Blunkett's plans, to be detailed in a consultation paper this week, will face a "war of attrition" from up to 100 MPs, pressure groups and unions.

The home secretary is expected to back "entitlement cards" in the document.
