Opposition peers get extra cash

Opposition parties in the House of Lords are to receive a funding boost of almost 100 per cent, following a vote by peers yesterday.

On their last day before recess, the Lords agreed to pay the Tories, Liberal Democrats and cross-benchers a total of £621,000 to help run their offices.

The Tory allowance will go up from £228,000 to £391,000, while the Liberal Democrats' funding will increase from £68,000 to £195,000.

The crossbench total will go up from £21,000 to £35,000.
