Mullin expresses ID card doubts

Chris Mullin, the chairman of the home affairs select committee, has expressed doubts that the government will be able to persuade the public that ID cards represent value for money.

He said that opposition to the system, which could cost up to £700 million, is more likely to be "practical rather than ideological".

David Blunkett will publish his consultation paper on ID cards tomorrow.
