African immigrants have overtaken homosexual men as the largest group of the population reporting new HIV infections.

In 2001, 4163 people were reported as HIV-positive, 1338 were homosexuals and 1533 were migrants from Africa.

Less than 200 cases have been attributed to heterosexual sex in the UK.
