Those dismissed have received handwritten notes from the chancellor offering commiserations and praising their work.

Former Scotland minister, George Foulkes, has also received support from the prime minister, being appointed to the Privy Council yesterday.

Others that were dismissed have been invited to Downing Street for a fuller explanation of Blair's decision.
