The Metropolitan police force is planning to recruit overseas officers on NHS-style short term contracts to fill manpower shortages.

London's police commissioner, Sir John Stevens, is considering recruiting up to 7000 officers from the Commonwealth to take the capital's force up to its ideal strength of 35,000.

The temporary officers would have to speak English and swear an oath to the Queen.
