Truancy crackdown catches 12,000

More than 12,000 children were caught truanting during a crackdown last month, the government has revealed.

Nearly half of the children were with a parent or other adult at the time, and only half of these had a reasonable excuse to not be in school.

"This is a situation that cannot be allowed to continue. Parents have to take responsibility, otherwise they are jeopardising their children's future," education minister Stephen Twigg said yesterday.
