Foot and mouth farmer charged with cruelty
Pig farmer Bobby Waugh, the owner of the Heddon-on-the-Wall farm where foot and mouth was first detected, has pleaded not guilty to 16 charges of animal cruelty when he appeared in court yesterday.
Alexander Birtwhistle, the brigadier brought in by Tony Blair to end the outbreak, has accused farmers of "sheer idleness" which helped the disease spread.
