A mother was yesterday given a 60-day jail sentence by Banbury magistrates for failing to ensure her children attended school.

It is believed to be the first custodial sentence passed for truancy since the government gave magistrates the power in November 2000.

Education secretary, Estelle Morris, welcomed the move.
