The government has backed MPs who argued that the census was out of date and belonged to the "pencil and paper era".

Responding to a Treasury affairs committee report, the government conceded that the next census could be based on other sources, such as tax and benefit records.

A computer survey will replace the forms which in the past were delivered to every household.
