Marines deployed in Afghanistan have discovered what is believed to be the largest cache of al Qaeda weapons so far, it was announced yesterday.

The UK force's comander Brigadier Roger Lane has hit back at critics of a "phoney war" in Afghanistran.

"People who call it a phoney war misunderstand the strategic effect of what we're trying to achieve," he told the Sun.
