Brown dismisses Brussels criticism

Gordon Brown has brushed aside criticism of his Budget from the European Commission.

The Brussels body had earlier expressed fears about the chancellor's decision to run a small budget deficit - stressing it ran contrary to the stability pact which demands that member states run a budget which is "close to balance or in surplus".

Facing the Commons Treasury select committee Brown also denied that his Budget contained a £7 billion spending hole and refused to rule out further National Insurance rises.
