Government figures analysed by the Lib Dems reveal that the poor will still pay a disproportionate amount in tax despite last week's budget.

The poorest fifth of society will pay 41 per cent of their incomes in direct and indirect taxation whereas top earners will pay just 35 per cent.

Figures also show that the chancellor has put an additional one million taxpayers into the top income tax bracket since 1997.
