Number 10 orders Tube pay rise

The government secretly ordered London Underground to pay a 5.7 per cent pay demand by train drivers in order to avoid the backlash from voters that two 48-hour strikes would have caused.

"We are in the business of stopping strikes, not starting them," one Whitehall aide told the Guardian.

Meanwhile, the Independent reports that the government's planned Tube PPP will not bring about any substantial improvement in the service until after 2010.
