Britain yesterday welcomed Zimbabwe's year-long suspension from the Commonwelth.

The decision, announced by Australian prime minister John Howard, stunned the Mugabe government in Harare.

Commonwealth leaders added to Robert Mugabe's woes when they called for last week's elections to be re-run.
