Labour Party chairman Charles Clarke said yesterday that he expects London mayor Ken Livingstone to run for re-election as an independent candidate.

The comments are seen as a blow to Livingstone's readmission hopes.

Clarke admitted he had conducted secret talks with Livingstone about allowing him back in to the party.
