Ministers distance themselves from Post Office row

A row has broken out over plans to de-regulate the Post Office that could lead to thousands of redundancies.

Private companies are to be allowed to compete with Consignia, the company set up to run the Post Office, to sort and deliver letters under radical new plans unveiled by the regulator Postcomm.

Trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt said she would not get involved in the regulator's decision.
