Plans to give gay and unmarried couples the same rights as a those of a married couple are being drawn up by ministers.

Reforms will include new rights in relation to property, pensions and next of kin status.

The Cabinet Office minister, Barbara Roche, has begun drafting the plans after Lib Dem peer Lord Lester agreed to drop his legislation - which had won significant support in the Lords.
