Tony Blair yesterday pledged the support of the government to any democratically-elected alternative to Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe.

"What we should concentrate on now...is to make sure that if the result does go against Mr Mugabe - but we cannot be sure because of the appalling things that have been happening - we must be in a position to make sure that the proper democratically-elected government is supported," he said.
