Accused teacher goes free

A jury yesterday found Amy Gehring not guilty of having sex with two under-age pupils.

The Department for Education said that officials would be examining the role of supply teacher agencies after Timeplan, a recruitment agency, ignored a warning and continued to employ the teacher concerned.

An editorial in the Mirror says the case is a symbol of what is wrong with today's public services, because staff shortages often mean that unsuitable candidates are offered teaching posts.
