A new net designed to prevent the accidental capture of dolphins will be trialed earlier than planned, the government announced yesterday.

The £30,000 net will be used in Westcountry waters from March, after it was revealed that up to 50 dolphins die each day as fishermen catch high-value bass.

The net includes an "escape hatch" at the top through which dolphins can escape.
