Mawer to go easy on 'trivial' rules breaches

The new parliamentary sleaze watchdog, Philip Mawer, said he will put complaints into perspective and stressed he will have no time for "trivial cases".

He said no one would be "gunning for those" who inadvertently break the rules but stressed he would not "be a poodle" either.

The new commissioner also admitted that he had "thought long and hard" - and even prayed - before deciding to accept the controversial post.
