Police in the clear over Omagh

The new policing board of Northern Ireland last night ruled that the Real IRA bomb blast in Omagh in 1998 could not have been prevented.

In a move to end the row between the province's chief constable, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, and the police ombudsmen, Nuala O'Loan, the Police Board is to appoint a senior police officer from outside Northern Ireland to look into the investigation into the bombing.
