A report by the National Audit Office will today call on the government to ensure that quangos are properly scrutinised.

The investigations concerned the former Teeside Development Corporation, which, when closed, left large deficits that the NAO predicts are likely to rise further.

The government should be certain that such bodies are able to manage large public funds, the report says.
