The Foreign Office is still investigating the identity of a US al Qaeda prisoner who claims he is British.

Although the prisoner was not holding a British passport, the Pentagon has informed the UK that he has continued to claim he is British.

It is unknown whether he was fighting with the Taliban or with al Qaeda, but it has emerged that he was captured in Afghanistan some weeks ago.

The prisoners are all being held on an American military base in Cuba, in cells described as "cages" by Amnesty International, which has condemned their treatment as inhumane.
