Deportation orders to Zimbabwe could be shelved by the Home Office because of the country's deteriorating political situation, it has emerged.

Although the department said that "there is not going to be a suspension of removals at this point", the government came under further pressure yesterday after it was disclosed that British Airways refused to accept a directive to fly a deportee from Gatwick to Zimbabwe.
