The prime minister is expected to announce this week that a small, advanced party of British troops is set to head to Afghanistan.

It is claimed that Blair had been hoping to announce the move today, although pressure from service chiefs is understood to have resulted in a delay.

The announcement may now come during prime minister's questions on Wednesday.
