American anger at Adams visit
Before embarking on a four day trip to Cuba, Gerry Adams last night dismissed claims that his visit will alienate supporters in the United States.
The Sinn Fein leader said that American sympathisers will understand his wish to personally thank Fidel Castro for his support during the IRA hunger strikes in 1981.
However news of his visit provoked an angry response in America.
J. Brian McCarthy, chairman of Irish American Republicans, said: "We will not allow him to go to Cuba and embrace a tyrant without comment."
