Gerhard Schroeder faces a crucial "back me or sack me" war vote in the German Bundestag today.

Germany's chancellor has directly linked his political future to his support for the military operation in Afghanistan, a move that has alienated many of his Green coalition partners.

If more than seven of the coalition vote against Schroeder his government will fall - but party leaders believe he will win the necessary parliamentary majority.
