Single Market Commissioner Frits Bolkestein used a meeting with prime minister Tony Blair yesterday to call for an expansion of GM crop production.

He said: "It's rather a saddening spectacle to see that 0.03 per cent of worldwide acreage producing GMs is within the confines of the EU, compared to about 60 to 70 per cent in the US".
