Terminal Five cleared for take off

The government has left open plans to build a third runway at Heathrow, following Stephen Byers' go-ahead for Terminal Five yesterday.

Despite intense local opposition to the move, the transport secretary told MPs he backed the new terminal.

"The decision that gives the go ahead to the fifth terminal is essential if we are to maintain Heathrow as one of the world's leading airports," he said.
