Blunkett to detail asylum reform

David Blunkett will today reveal the details of the government's reform programme for asylum and immigration.

On the stocks will be plans to scrap the controversial voucher system, develop a network of barracks-style reception centres to replace the dispersal system, introduce citizenship classes for those seeking to become UK passport holders and a tougher approach to removing failed asylum seekers. The dispersal system, introduced by Blunkett's predecessor Jack Straw, has been blamed for an outbreak of civil disturbances earlier this year.

The announcement will come in a Commons statement at 3.30pm today.
