Arafat and Blair to discuss new peace bid
The head of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, is due in London today for a meeting with Tony Blair and foreign secretary Jack Straw. Reviving the Middle East peace process will be top of the agenda as Arafat seeks to build on western appreciation for his support of the war on terrorism. The prime minister and the US president George W Bush see a revived peace plan as a key part of bringing stability to the region, as well as showing they are not conducting a war against Islam. Blair will tell Arafat that a period of calm is needed so talks can resume.
