Tony Blair predicted the prospect of a new world order rising from the ashes of the terrorist attacks of September 11 yesterday telling delegates at Labour's party conference in Brighton that Britain would win against Osama Bin Laden and his Taliban protectors.

He sought to prepare the country for war and warned that reprisals in the UK would be likely to follow.

The prime minister also hinted at an early referendum on the single currency before the next election.

His speech is reviewed as "the most powerful of his career" and "most truthful and heartfelt" by the broadsheets.

William Hague's former press aide Amanda Platell describes the speech as a "brilliant performance" that deserves "full marks".
