Brown's Diana snub
Gordon Brown was given the job of choosing the official memorial for princess Diana to placate his ruffled feelings after he was not invited to her funeral.
The move to soothe the chancellor and avoid "consequences too terrible to ponder" for Labour are revealed in James Naughtie's book "The Rivals".
It is also claimed that Brown may quit politics for a top international job if Blair seeks a third term as PM.
