Foxhunting in Scotland could be made illegal as early as next year after members of the Scottish Parliament voted by 84 votes to 34 to permit the Protection of Wild Mammals Bill (Scotland) to proceed to its next legislative stage.

With Scottish Executive ministers pledging not to frustrate its passage, pro-hunt campaigners said they would make a legal challenge, if the bill becomes law, under the European Convention on Human Rights.
